Fall/Winter Skincare Routine

Let’s be honest, winter is in full effect. Did we experience the fall season? I don’t think so, at least not here in Buffalo anyway. We had our first snowfall last week and it’s as if my skin anticipated colder weather because it’s been EXTRA dry. I have dry skin pretty much all year round, but as soon as the weather drops below 50 degrees I swear my skin flakes off. After a lot of trial and error, I figured out a combination of products that helps keep my skin supple and protected from that winter wind. Keep scrolling to see my current skincare routine!

A lot of people hate makeup wipes and I’m sure not one of those people. I always start off my routine with Pond’s Cold Cream Makeup Wipes * because they’re very wet (lol) and remove my makeup easily. It’s not extremely drying either. I refuse to buy makeup wipes from another brand because they’re THAT good.

After I remove my face makeup and eyeshadow, I like to take Bioderma * on a cotton round to remove my mascara. Mascara has to be THE most annoying thing to remove in my opinion and I don’t even wear the waterproof kind! Thankfully, Bioderma makes it super quick and easy, which is key after a long day/night. All I do is press the soaked cotton round over my eye, let it sit for a few seconds and then swipe downward until it’s all gone.

You would think I’d be done cleansing, but I like to take that extra step to make sure I don’t leave any makeup residue on my face. Especially since I have acne prone skin. The cleanser I’m currently using is the Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Cloud Cream Cleanser. It’s very gentle and it’s whipped texture doesn’t strip your face of natural oils. Plus, a little goes a long way! Rule of thumb: If you have dry skin, steer clear of gel and bar soap cleansers to avoid drying out your face.

Once I pat my face dry, I then take a Peter Thomas Roth Max Complexion Correction Pad and run that over gently. I was using this a couple times a week in the summer and it was amazing at keeping random breakouts at bay, but it can be a little drying as the days grow colder. If you have oily, acne prone skin this could change the game for you! Sometimes I’ll substitute it with the Derma E Anti Aging scrub if I need something less drying that still gets the job done.

To restore my Skin’s pH level I like to spritz some Mario Badescu toner *. My skin can feel a little tight after exfoliating so I like to use it directly after. The lavender scent is my favorite but it sold out on Amazon at the time. I settled for the cucumber scent. Woe is me.

If you have dry skin and you’ve never tried adding an essence to your skincare routine, you’re missing out on a blessing I promise you. The Marula Essence has completely changed the game for me! I splash a few drops in my hands then gently pat it on. Afterwards, my skin feels like a baby’s bottom. I have always found Korean skincare so fascinating, I had to see what an essence could do for me. Many people say they don’t see it as a necessary step, but this specific one rids my face of dry patches and has my skin feeling amazing the following morning. It’s amazing to have products made for women by women. The brand has created over 30,000 jobs for women in Africa!

More than halfway there! The Peter Thomas Roth Potent C Power Serum has literally banished my hyperpigmentation to oblivion. 2017 was a really bad year for my skin and this serum has removed my most stubborn dark spots. This is the most expensive item in my routine hands down (probably in my whole skincare stash), but I can honestly say its worth the hefty price tag. Paired with the right sunscreen, it’s the perfect daytime combo.

Now it’s time for moisturizer! This product comes with a little backstory. Back in 2014, Buffalo experienced it’s harshest winter since the 70s. I used to have combination skin prior to said winter – enough said. Can you even fathom what -35 degree weather does to your skin?! I had to switch moisturizers quick before my face turned into sand paper. That’s when I turned to the Cerave Moisturizing Cream *. This has been a cult favorite for years and it 100% earned its title. Although it does take a good minute to spread evenly, it’s thick texture locks in hydration for good. It also mixes well with all the other product I use in my routine.

Okay, we finally made it to the last step! I wrap up my nighttime routine with the Peter Thomas Roth Potent-C Eye Cream. As you’ve probably noticed, Peter Thomas Roth is a routine staple for me. This brand has such amazing, effective products I’m so happy I’ve had the chance to collaborate with them in the past #notspons. Once I find something that works for me, I stick to it. I’m a creature of habit. Many people skip this skin care step but it’s so crucial. The eye area is extremely delicate and is drier than the rest of your face. You have to show it some love to avoid premature wrinkles! It has a thicker consistency so make sure you allow it to sink in before you go to sleep. Nothing’s worse than spending 20 minutes on your skincare routine to then have it end up all over your pillow. You have to let your skin absorb all the goodness!

I hope you enjoyed reading about what I use in my current nighttime skincare routine! I pretty much use the same products for my daytime routine, just excluding the makeup removing steps, exfoliation and essence. Sunscreen is my last step because I refuse to let those UVA and UVB rays age me before my time. What products do you swear by? Is your routine just as extensive as mine or do you keep it short and sweet with a couple products?
